Really great photos, Hans. Can now better imagine you at sea. La Palma looks ‘tourist un-spoilt’, lovely. Your pics and commentary help us in our virtual travel with you!
Thanks!!!
Hi Hans
Nice to see you’re enjoying yourself along the way, being a proper tourist. Now comes the long haul in the deep blue.
For a feeling of true isolation, when sailing in the Indian Ocean I tied a sheet to myself and drifted about 20m behind the boat. I don’t suggest you do that in mid-Atlantic!
How is the night shift going? – assume you have auto-pilot but still keeping watch through part of the night.
Keep having fun on your epic voyage.
Hi Mish
Have had a very pleasant and relaxing time here in La Palma. It’s a quiet island, made more so with the virtual absence of any tourists. The few tourists that are here are largely from the Spanish mainland.
And no, don’t think I’ll be tying myself to the boat for a swim mid-Atlantic! Probably a bit dangerous when one is alone.
Nights are a bit heavy-going. Yes, the boat is on autopilot. I have radar so set radar alarms for anything coming within specified distances. Sleep for an hour or maybe 90 minutes at a time, get up and go up on deck, adjust the sails if necessary, check the course, making sure the chart plotter tallies with the compasses and autopilot… (obviously very important if you’re approaching land!) then go back to sleep. It’s tiring, but doable.
All the best!
